Criminal: All criminal matters will be in person. The Court will continue to offer the option of remote court attendance for attorneys on motions that do not require the defendant to be present.

​

Civil & Business Court: The parties are encouraged to attend in person but may appear remotely.

​

BUSINESS COURT

 

The Court schedules Business Court matters on Mondays.  Business Court motion hour is held weekly.  All motions should be noticed for 9:00 am.

JURY AND BENCH TRIALS

All bench trials and jury trials will be held in person.

​

 

 

Any hearing that will require testimony from witnesses or the introduction of any evidence will be held in person.

​

For any other matter (except motion hour), the Court encourages in person attendance. However, the Court will continue to offer the remote option provided the party seeking to appear remotely provides notice to the Court and opposing counsel at least 7 days prior to the scheduled court appearance. The notice shall set forth the reasons for the request and will be subject to Court review.

ALL REMOTE APPEARANCES SHALL BE BY VIDEO ZOOM. Each person appearing by video Zoom shall join the meeting with their name and case number displayed. (Example: Atty. John Smith 21-CI-1234). Each party is expected to appear by video unless their circumstances only allow them to call into Zoom through a telephone. Zoom “courtroom” etiquette: All parties joining the Zoom meeting shall be on mute until your case is called. For remote appearances other than motion hour, you will remain in the waiting room and be brought into the “courtroom” once the court is ready to call your case. Circuit Court is the court of general jurisdiction that hears civil matters involving more than $5,000, capital offenses and felonies, land dispute title cases and contested probate cases. Circuit Court has the power to issue injunctions, writs of prohibition and writs of mandamus and to hear appeals from District Court and administrative agencies.  In Jefferson County, there are thirteen separate divisions, or courtrooms.  Separate judges preside over each division.
